Student Speak - How I Landed by Dream Job at EY
Student Speak: How I landed my Dream Job
My name is Priyam Agarwal, a student of final year BCom Honors.
Ever since I joined BCom Honors in 2018 at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), I have always dreamt of a career in the Big Four, and I’m really thankful to the Placement Department and Haresh Sir, my Placement Coordinator for providing me this placement opportunity at Ernst & Young.
The Commerce Department has always provided good placement opportunities for B Com Honors students and this year was no different. The department had a major role in my success story. Firstly, during the COVID-19 lockdown, the Department had given free access to various courses of Coursera as i was able to utilize this opportunity to develop my soft skills. I was able to complete skill enhancement courses on MS-Excel, Tableau, Power-BI, Financial Services and Accounting. We are increasingly living in a technology driven world and keeping abreast with the latest is an absolute necessity.
Secondly, the Commerce department offers Certified Management Accountant (CMA) programme in collaboration with Miles Education. I passed one out of two papers of CMA. The job profile at EY is Auditing & Assurance, and the work allotted will be at a Global level. Being a CMA student played a key role in cracking the Interviews.
Finally, Placement Talks conducted by the Department helped me get a good knowledge of the placement process, how to prepare for the various steps like group discussions, personal interviews etc.
The biggest challenge that I faced was to remain mentally strong, as EY was the 5th organization that I was attempting, and when I couldn’t clear the rounds of many companies and when some of my classmates got selected, it created a doubt in my mind regarding my skill and ability. I should also mention that my classmates were always around to motivate and encourage me whenever I was overcome by these self-doubts.
Personal Interview was the most difficult part of the process. While the Technical round focused on academic knowledge and certifications, the HR round was a test of communication skills, confidence and adaptability to the EY culture.
I hope to gain knowledge and experience in EY and develop on my interest in financial analytics field. I also aspire to become Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in future.
